Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
