Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to question certain decisions made by the official, echoing the protocol already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
